SO - l ately my main desktop PC decides to run its antivirus scan (Windows Defender) when I start using it in the morning, or sometimes after I have been using it for an hour or so. The thing is, it is on 24/7 and can run scans during the evening or one of the other ~12 hours I’m not using it. Why does it decide to scan right after I start using it? It’s a pretty fast machine (SSD, i7, 16GB RAM) but it’s unusable during the scan.

Kinja'd!!!

Is there a way to disable scans while the computer is being used, or to schedule them for the early morning or something?

Honda e for your time.

I haven’t experienced what you’re seeing but here are a couple tips.

Adjusting Defender’s scan schedule is not the easiest thing, I don’t believe there’s a builtin GUI for it. If you’re not thrown by some Group Policy editing, here you go.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security/threat-protection/windows-defender-antivirus/scheduled-catch-up-scans-windows-defender-antivirus

You can also use the task scheduler but I don’t think this will change how the basic functionality of Defender is scanning whenever it wants.

Good luck!

Does changing the hours you set windows for active use influence this behavior at all?  I know I changed mine from the normal “work day time” that was default to it being active in the evening and I have never run into this issue.

I have an i5 / SSD / 8GB system that’s a few years old, and ESET scans don’t bother me during gaming or anything else . I would guess either something is amiss with your system performance, or Defender is doing something sub-optimal.
